4.01 reviewsWhip In RV Park in Big Spring, Texas, is a peaceful community-atmosphere campground in Howard County — a welcoming retreat for solo travelers, families, and groups exploring the Big Spring area's west Texas landscape, where Comanche Trail Lake, the Big Spring State Park's scenic mesa, and the Permian Basin's specific geological and petroleum heritage give the Howard County seat its character as a surprisingly diverse destination on the US-87 and I-20 corridor. Big Spring's Howard County position on I-20 midway between Midland-Odessa to the west and Abilene to the east gives the campground the practical west Texas interstate convenience alongside the Big Spring area's specific outdoor recreation and heritage attractions that the Caprock Escarpment's eastern edge and the Colorado River watershed's headwaters sustain.
Peaceful, well-maintained RV sites with the complete practical infrastructure give Whip In the community campground character of a Howard County property whose welcoming atmosphere and convenient Big Spring location give both the cross-country traveler and the Permian Basin extended-stay guest the comfortable overnight and longer-term RV accommodation in a campground whose community character is the defining guest experience. The park's welcoming orientation for solo travelers, families, and groups gives it the inclusive character of an independently operated west Texas campground. Pets are welcome.
Big Spring State Park, one mile west of downtown Big Spring on TX-700 in Howard County, protects Scenic Mountain's 200-foot mesa above the city — a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department natural area atop the mesa's Permian limestone surface where the panoramic viewshed of the surrounding west Texas landscape, the prairie dog town, and the spring wildflower bloom on the mesa's exposed limestone give the urban-edge state park the ecological and scenic complement to Big Spring's commercial development below. The park's name derives from the natural spring at the foot of the mesa that gave the town its name — the spring was a critical water source on the Comanche War Trail and the Butterfield Overland Mail route.
Comanche Trail Lake, three miles south of downtown Big Spring on the Comanche Trail Road in Howard County, is the municipal recreational reservoir whose bass, catfish, and sunfish fishery, the trail walk around the lake's perimeter, and the Comanche Trail Park's picnic facilities give Big Spring its most accessible urban recreation area for the Howard County resident and the campground visitor. The lake's name commemorates the Comanche War Trail's historical passage through Howard County on the ancient raiding and trading route between the southern plains and the Mexican settlements of the Rio Grande.
Whip In RV Park serves guests year-round in Howard County's west Texas climate, where the mild winters sustain the year-round Permian Basin industrial and travel market and the spring and fall seasons provide the most comfortable conditions for the Big Spring State Park's hiking, the Comanche Trail Lake fishing, and the Midland-Odessa Permian Basin Petroleum Museum day trip. The Potton House Museum in Big Spring, the 1901 Victorian home of Joseph Potton, and the Heritage Museum of Big Spring's West Texas history collection give the Howard County county seat the specific historical depth of a Permian Basin community whose water heritage, railroad history, and oil discovery in 1929 give Big Spring its layered west Texas character. Reserve sites ahead for the spring outdoor recreation season and peak Permian Basin activity periods.
