Sturgis View Campground
Sturgis, South Dakota
Set on a hillside just 1.5 miles from Sturgis's famous Main Street, Sturgis View Campground delivers exactly what its name promises: sweeping, 360-degree views of the Black Hills that serve as a constant and stunning reminder of where you are. Established as a dedicated destination for motorcycle enthusiasts attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally since 2004, the campground has earned a loyal following among riders who want to be close enough to the action without being swallowed by it. Elevated and removed just enough to catch a breeze and some perspective, this is where to be when Sturgis comes calling.
The campground offers a mix of accommodations to suit different preferences. Full hookup RV sites with water, electric, and sewer give motorhome travelers the conveniences they need, while tent sites with beautiful open views of the surrounding hills serve those who travel lighter. Well-maintained cabins sleeping up to six adults offer a comfortable option for groups, and the facilities—hot showers, flush toilets, WiFi—are kept notably clean and functional. An observation deck takes full advantage of the elevated position, creating a dedicated viewpoint for taking in the Black Hills panorama, watching the traditional bomber flyover during Rally week, or simply sitting above the buzz with a drink in hand. A swimming pool, hot tub, and on-site food and drinks round out the comfort amenities.
The Black Hills frame every view from the campground, and their visual presence is as dramatic as any backdrop in the American West. The granite spires, forested ridgelines, and open meadows of these ancient mountains shift in color and character throughout the day, catching pink light at dawn and purple shadow at dusk. Wildlife is a regular presence—deer browse the hillsides at the property's edges, and hawks circle the thermals above the campground through the afternoon. The wider Sturgis area sits at the northeastern gateway to the Black Hills, positioning the campground for easy access in every direction across the region.
Deadwood, the historic gold rush gambling town immortalized in legend and on screen, is a short drive to the southwest and worth at least an afternoon. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park—one of the finest wildlife viewing destinations in the entire country—and Badlands National Park are all within comfortable reach for day trips between rally events or for visitors exploring the region independent of the motorcycle gathering. The Mickelson Trail, a converted rail line winding through more than one hundred miles of Black Hills scenery, attracts cyclists throughout the warmer months.
Sturgis View Campground sees its peak demand during the world-famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally each August, which brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to the region and fills every available site weeks in advance. Outside of Rally week, the campground serves as a quality base for Black Hills exploration throughout the warm season, with far more availability and a considerably quieter atmosphere. Whether you're making the pilgrimage for the Rally or simply passing through one of America's most dramatic landscapes, Sturgis View Campground offers the Black Hills from a hillside position with no bad angles. Reserve early for August—this one fills up fast.
