5.01 reviewsImperial River Company in Maupin, Oregon, puts guests directly on the banks of the Deschutes River — Oregon's most celebrated whitewater and fly fishing river, where the 100-mile lower Deschutes canyon's Class III and IV rapids, the wild steelhead and rainbow trout fishery, and the high desert canyon scenery of the Columbia River watershed's most significant tributary give guests the most complete Oregon river recreation experience from a single riverside campground in Wasco County. Maupin's position on US-197 at the Deschutes River's most active commercial whitewater and fishing section gives Imperial River Company the specific character of a campground and outfitter operation whose identity is inseparable from the Deschutes River itself — the property is on the river, not near it, and the river experience is the central attraction that organizes the entire Imperial River Company guest experience.
Riverside camping with the complete outfitter services — whitewater rafting guided trips, fishing guide access, and the overnight base camp on the Deschutes River bank — give Imperial River Company the specific combination of campground and adventure outfitter that the Maupin area's position on the lower Deschutes River specifically sustains as the most commercially active outdoor recreation community on any Oregon river outside the Rogue. The campground's riverside position gives tent and RV guests the Deschutes River experience at the camp's edge, where the sound of the river's current and the canyon's morning light on the basalt walls give the Maupin riverfront its specific high desert river canyon character. Pets are welcome.
The lower Deschutes River below Sherar's Falls from Maupin to the Columbia River confluence is designated Wild and Scenic under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act — a 98-mile federally protected river corridor through the Columbia Plateau's basalt canyon in a landscape of sage, bunchgrass, and canyon wall rimrock that the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife manages as a combination whitewater recreation and wild fish conservation river. The river's wild summer steelhead return from June through September and the winter steelhead run from December through March give the Maupin guide fishing operation the year-round angling calendar that no other Oregon canyon river can match for steelhead diversity.
The Deschutes River's Surf Wave at Maupin is one of the most popular whitewater surfing and kayaking features in the Pacific Northwest — a Class III river-left wave on the Deschutes that gives kayakers and river surfers the sustained wave feature that the Deschutes River's consistent summer flow and the wave's hydraulic character specifically create. The Boulder Creek, Whitehorse, and Colorado rapids on the stretch between Maupin and the Columbia River give Class III and IV raft and kayak paddlers the commercial and private boating corridor that Maupin's outfitter community has built its outdoor economy around since the 1970s.
Imperial River Company serves guests through Wasco County's Deschutes River recreation season from April through October, with the summer whitewater rafting season from June through August sustaining the commercial guided raft trip and the family float trip market and the spring and fall steelhead runs sustaining the fishing guide market that the wild steelhead's seasonal Deschutes returns generate. The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, 30 miles north of Maupin on US-197, gives the Deschutes River campground's guests the windsurfing and kiteboarding at Hood River and the viewshed of the Columbia River Gorge's basalt cliff walls and the seasonal wildflower bloom on the eastern gorge's Oregon side. Reserve sites and guided trips well ahead for the peak summer whitewater season.

Brand new campground, we were the first to use our spot. It was our first trip with our new trailer and we were nervous about getting down the hill and to the site but it was totally fine. The campground is right on the Deschutes and I can tell it is going to be ridiculously popular during the summer.
