Sandbanks River Country Campground
Prince Edward, Ontario
70 RV Sites, 6 Cabins, 8 Tent Sites, 3 Cottages
Sandbanks River Country Campground in Prince Edward County, Ontario, provides a lakeside and river-connected camping retreat in one of Ontario's most celebrated wine and culinary tourism destinations, where the Outlet River's connection to East Lake and the nearby Sandbanks Provincial Park's internationally recognized freshwater sand dunes and barrier beach create a natural recreation environment of exceptional quality in a county that has transformed over the past two decades from a quiet agricultural peninsula into one of Canada's most sought-after tourism destinations. The campground's gated lake and river access, kayak and boat rentals, and cabin accommodations serve the diverse visitor base drawn to Prince Edward County's remarkable combination of natural beauty and refined rural culture.
The campground's water recreation focus reflects Prince Edward County's lake and river character: boat docks, kayak rentals, boat rentals, paddleboarding, canoeing, and the beach provide comprehensive non-motorized water access in the protected waters of the Outlet River and East Lake. Cabin rentals accommodate guests who prefer enclosed lakeside lodging, and the full hookup RV sites, gated entrance, recreation center, volleyball and sports courts, horseshoes, laundry, showers, and propane exchange address the practical and social recreation needs of multi-day stays in this celebrated Ontario destination. The picnicking areas and fishing access complete the natural recreation roster for guests whose county visits combine outdoor recreation with the winery and cheese producer visits that Prince Edward County's culinary tourism circuit provides.
Sandbanks Provincial Park, Ontario's most visited provincial park and a short drive from the campground, protects the world's largest freshwater sandbars and dunes where the Outlet and West Lake's barrier systems have created dune fields rising 25 meters above the lake surface in a geological formation unique in the freshwater world. The park's Outlet Beach, Dunes Beach, and Lakeshore Beach provide some of Ontario's finest sand beach swimming in the warm, shallow waters of Lake Ontario's Bay of Quinte's protected extension, and the dune ecosystem's fragile flora and the park's white-tailed deer population add natural history interest to the beach recreation.
Prince Edward County's wine industry, centered on the Wellington and Hillier communities, has established the county as one of Ontario's premier cool-climate wine appellations since the early 2000s, with over 40 wineries producing the cool-climate pinot noir, chardonnay, and sparkling wines that the county's unique limestone plain soils and Lake Ontario's moderating influence enable. The Bloomfield and Picton heritage communities provide boutique shopping, farm-to-table dining, and the artisan culture that the county's creative and culinary community has developed in the historic downtown buildings of the county's agricultural service centers.
Sandbanks River Country Campground operates seasonally from late spring through early fall in Prince Edward County's Ontario lake country climate, with the summer season from July through Labour Day weekend driving peak demand for the Outlet Beach swimming and the county's busy tourism calendar of wine festivals, artisan markets, and the Wellington Outdoor Summer Concert Series. The grape harvest season in September and October creates a second compelling visitation reason as the county's wineries open their crush pads to visitors and the cooler autumn light transforms the limestone plain's vineyard landscape into one of Ontario's most photogenic seasonal settings. Early booking for summer weekends is essential given the county's limited campground capacity.
