Cavanal View RV Park in Poteau, Oklahoma, is a new big-rig-friendly full-hookup campground in Le Flore County's Ouachita Mountain foothills — a property situated just off Highway 112 with pull-through and back-in sites sized and leveled for modern large rigs, within easy reach of Poteau's restaurants, shopping, and Choctaw Casino while maintaining the quiet country atmosphere that the Cavanal Hill area's forested landscape delivers. The campground's position between Fort Smith, Arkansas, to the east and the Talimena Scenic Drive corridor to the west places it at the gateway to one of the most scenically dramatic but least-trafficked outdoor recreation areas in the south-central United States. Pull-through and back-in sites with full hookups provide the utility access that both through-travelers on U.S. 271 and destination guests arriving for the Ouachita Mountain recreation corridor require. The park's new infrastructure — roads, utilities, and site leveling built to current standards — gives big-rig operators the confidence of facilities designed around modern RV specifications rather than adapted from older layouts that struggle with contemporary coach lengths. The proximity to Poteau's commercial services keeps practical amenities within a short drive, and the casino's entertainment programming provides evening options that remote Oklahoma campgrounds rarely offer. Pets are welcome. Cavanal Hill, rising 1,999 feet above sea level just south of Poteau, holds the distinction of being the world's highest hill — a classification based on the technical definition distinguishing hills from mountains by the degree of topographic prominence rather than absolute elevation, making Cavanal's summit a genuinely curiosity-satisfying destination for visitors who appreciate the specificity of geography superlatives. The summit's hiking trail provides the viewshed across the Arkansas River Valley, the Ouachita Mountains to the south, and the Oklahoma-Arkansas border terrain that the hill's commanding position makes available, framing a landscape of forest ridges and agricultural valleys that is more visually complex than the surrounding terrain's modest profile would suggest. The Talimena Scenic Drive — Oklahoma Highway 1 and Arkansas Highway 88 through the Ouachita National Forest — runs 54 miles along the crest of Rich Mountain and Winding Stair Mountain between Talihina, Oklahoma, and Mena, Arkansas, in a mountain ridge road that provides continuous viewsheds across the forested Ouachita highlands in a drive consistently cited among the most scenic in the south-central United States. The fall color season on the Talimena Drive, when the mixed oak-pine forest of the Ouachita Mountains delivers a deciduous color display against the dark green conifer ridges, draws visitors from across the Oklahoma and Arkansas plains who have limited access to mountain foliage elsewhere in the region. Cavanal View RV Park operates year-round in Poteau's mild Ouachita Mountain climate, with the spring and fall seasons representing the most comfortable outdoor recreation windows for the Talimena Drive, Cavanal Hill hiking, and the Robert S. Kerr Reservoir recreation that the Arkansas River navigation project created immediately west of Fort Smith. Fort Smith National Historic Site, preserving the federal court and jail where Judge Isaac Parker presided over Indian Territory law enforcement in the late 19th century, provides the historical interpretation of the Arkansas-Oklahoma border region's frontier justice history that makes Fort Smith a legitimate half-day cultural excursion from the Poteau base. Reserve sites ahead for the Talimena Scenic Drive's fall foliage season from mid-October through early November.
