Bells Island Campground

Bells Island Campground sits on 22 acres of Currituck Sound shoreline in Currituck, North Carolina, midway between the Outer Banks resort communities to the south and Virginia Beach to the north—a position that places it at the edge of one of the Atlantic Coast's most remarkable coastal systems while maintaining the quieter, less commercially developed character of Currituck County's mainland. The campground's waterfront on the Currituck Sound provides direct access to the estuary that separates the Outer Banks barrier islands from the North Carolina and Virginia mainland, a sheltered body of water that is among the finest fishing and birding habitats on the entire Atlantic Flyway. The campground accommodates RV campers across 39 full hookup sites and 24 water-and-electric-only sites, with 26 primitive tent sites filling out the offering. A dump station, clean restrooms, and shower facilities serve the property, while a boat ramp and fishing pier provide direct water access to the Sound. Tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits deliver dry-land recreation, and the peer and waterfront environment support fishing, crabbing, kayaking, jet skiing, boating, and swimming from the shore. The setting is quiet compared to the busy Outer Banks beach towns—a genuine estuary camping experience rather than a beach resort parking lot. Currituck County's landscape is defined by the sound-to-sea transition of barrier island ecology—maritime forests, brackish marshes, and the freshwater ponds that provide critical habitat for wintering waterfowl along the Atlantic Flyway. The Currituck Sound itself is one of the largest freshwater estuaries on the East Coast, its salinity kept low by the extensive freshwater drainage of the coastal plain, and the combination of aquatic vegetation, shallow depths, and lack of commercial development makes it a productive environment for largemouth bass, perch, and the migratory waterfowl that concentrate here in impressive numbers through fall and winter. The northern Outer Banks, accessible via the Wright Memorial Bridge or by ferry from Currituck Mainland, preserves one of the last remaining 4WD beach corridors on the East Coast—the Carova area north of Corolla where a distinct herd of Colonial Spanish Mustangs roams the beach and dune grasslands that cannot be reached by paved road.
