Shady Oaks Camping Resort
Plattsburgh, New York
12 RV Sites, 4 Tent Sites, 1 Glamping Site
In Plattsburgh, New York—on the western shore of Lake Champlain in the North Country between the Adirondack foothills and the Vermont Green Mountains, three-quarters of a mile from the City Beach on the lake's New York shore—Shady Oaks Camping Resort provides a full-service RV and camping facility that is as much about the Lake Champlain and Adirondack access it enables as it is about the pool, laundry, and fire pits it provides on the property. Level sites under a canopy of towering maple trees, a swimming pool, an outdoor movie theater, seasonal themed weekend events, and the particular community character of a locally owned and operated campground distinguish it from the chain-managed alternatives in the region, and the lake is close enough to walk to with a chair and a fishing rod in the morning.
Full hookup sites with water, sewer, and 30-amp electric serve RV guests in both back-in and pull-through configurations, with several sites large enough to accommodate big rigs in a tree-canopy setting that the maples make genuinely pleasant during the heat of July and August. Tent camping positions give the campground's spectrum of accommodation types the range it needs to serve solo tent travelers, camping families, and RV guests within the same property. Clean restrooms with showers, a laundry room, and a banquet hall serve the full guest population with the infrastructure that week-long stays require. A camp store with camping supplies and basic necessities keeps common needs on property. Communal fire pits, horseshoe pits, and cornhole sets create the social gathering infrastructure that campground evenings are built around, and a seasonal events calendar of themed rallies, campouts, and special weekends gives repeat-visit guests the programming variety that a single fixed-amenity set can't provide. An outdoor movie theater rounds out the evening entertainment with the particular charm that watching films under an upstate New York sky delivers.
Lake Champlain's western shore access—three-quarters of a mile to the City Beach—puts the lake's recreational programming within the walking distance that Plattsburgh's compact layout makes practical. The lake itself, extending 120 miles between New York and Vermont, is one of the Northeast's most historically significant bodies of water—the site of decisive Revolutionary War and War of 1812 naval battles, the deep cold lake whose fishing for landlocked Atlantic salmon, lake trout, and walleye attracts serious anglers from both states and Quebec. The lake's visibility across to the Vermont shore, with the Green Mountains rising from the Burlington waterfront, provides the landscape backdrop that makes Lake Champlain campground stays specifically beautiful in morning light.
The Adirondack Park, immediately west of Plattsburgh, provides the hiking, paddling, and wilderness camping access of one of the largest protected natural areas in the lower 48 states. High Peaks Wilderness Area trails reach Whiteface Mountain and the High Peaks cluster within a manageable drive, and the Lake Placid Olympic complex, Ausable Chasm, and the full Adirondack outdoor recreation infrastructure are accessible from the Plattsburgh base. Burlington, Vermont—one of New England's most vibrant mid-sized cities—is accessible by ferry across the lake for a day visit that requires no driving over the mountain passes that the land route demands.
Shady Oaks Camping Resort is open seasonally through the North Country camping season, typically from spring through early fall. Summer represents peak demand with the combination of Lake Champlain swimming, Adirondack hiking, and the campground's programming calendar at its fullest. Fall foliage—both the Adirondack maples within the park and the view across the lake to the Vermont hills—creates a second peak period of exceptional visual reward. Reserve your maple-shaded site early for summer and fall weekends.
