Smiley Creek Lodge

Ketchum, Idaho

6 RV Sites, 7 Cabins, 2 Yurts

Smiley Creek Lodge on the Sawtooth Scenic Byway in Blaine County, Idaho, offers full-hookup RV sites, cabin rentals, and glamping yurts near Sun Valley and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area — a basecamp on one of the most scenically extraordinary mountain byways in the American West, where the Wood River Valley's cottonwood and willow corridors open into the granite peaks and alpine lakes of the Sawtooth Mountains and the Challis National Forest beyond Stanley Basin. The lodge's byway position gives guests the most direct access to the Sawtooth Wilderness's trail network, the Stanley Basin's fly fishing on the Salmon River's upper headwaters, and the broader recreation landscape that the Sun Valley-Ketchum corridor has made famous among skiers, mountain bikers, and fly fishers for decades. Full-hookup RV sites, cabin rentals, and glamping yurts give the lodge the accommodation flexibility to serve both self-contained travelers and guests arriving without equipment for the Sawtooth country experience, with each accommodation format allowing genuine immersion in the mountain setting that the Sawtooth Scenic Byway's landscape provides as a continuous backdrop. The lodge's long-standing character as a recognized destination on the byway gives it the established reputation and the operational reliability that repeat visitors specifically seek when returning to the Sun Valley corridor for consecutive seasons. Pets are welcome. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area, surrounding the lodge's byway position in Custer and Blaine Counties, is one of the premier mountain recreation areas in the Intermountain West — 756,000 acres of granite peaks, cirque lakes, and the headwaters of four major river systems (the Salmon, South Fork Payette, Boise, and Big Wood Rivers) that sustain the hiking, backpacking, fishing, and whitewater recreation that Idaho's central mountain core specifically provides. The Sawtooth Wilderness at the recreation area's heart protects 217,000 acres of the most rugged and most visually dramatic terrain in the Idaho Rockies — the granite spires that give the range its name create a skyline of vertical grandeur visible from the Stanley Basin's valley floor that anchors the entire byway's visual identity. Sun Valley, 40 miles south of the lodge's byway position via the Wood River Valley, is one of the oldest and most celebrated ski resorts in the United States — the first destination ski resort in the country, opened in 1936 by Union Pacific Railroad chairman Averell Harriman with the express purpose of attracting wealthy passengers to an Idaho mountain resort. The Bald Mountain ski terrain above Ketchum continues to rank among the country's finest ski mountains for its sustained vertical drop, consistent snow quality, and the Ketchum-Sun Valley community's concentration of world-class restaurants and galleries that distinguishes it from purely ski-focused resort towns. Smiley Creek Lodge operates through the Idaho mountain season with summer providing the peak hiking, fishing, and byway-touring activity and winter offering the Sun Valley ski proximity that gives the Ketchum-Stanley corridor its year-round mountain resort character. The Stanley area fly fishing on the upper Salmon River below Redfish Lake provides the specific cold, clear mountain trout fishing that brings destination anglers to the Sawtooth country from across the western United States — salmon and steelhead restoration in the Salmon River system and the resident cutthroat and rainbow trout of the Stanley Basin's tributaries sustain the fly fishing ecology that the Sawtooth backcountry waters deliver. Reserve sites and yurts ahead for the peak summer hiking season and the fall steelhead season when the Salmon River draw from the Pacific Northwest angling community competes with the hiking and foliage visitor market.
