Chinook Cabins & RV Park
South Fork, Colorado
17 RV Sites
Chinook Cabins and RV Park in South Fork, Colorado, has operated since 1908 in the upper Rio Grande valley, making it one of the oldest continuously operating camping and lodging properties in the southern Rockies and placing guests at the confluence of two of southwestern Colorado's most compelling outdoor recreation and cultural heritage draws. Positioned between the Rio Grande National Forest's vast wilderness to the north and west and the mining ghost towns and arts communities of the San Juan Mountains to the northeast, South Fork occupies an ideal geographic position for exploring a corner of Colorado that receives a fraction of the attention directed at better-marketed mountain destinations.
The property offers historic log cabin rentals alongside full hookup RV sites, with both accommodation types reflecting the century-plus heritage of the location. The cabins' log construction connects guests visually and architecturally to the property's nineteenth-century origins in a way that newer construction cannot replicate, and the combination of cabin character and modern utility connections represents a balance between historical authenticity and practical comfort. Big rig access on the RV side of the property accommodates larger motorhomes and fifth wheels navigating the mountain highway corridors of US-160.
South Fork's defining natural asset is its position adjacent to Wolf Creek Pass, where the Continental Divide crossing on US-160 reaches 10,850 feet and Wolf Creek Ski Area sits immediately at the summit—the highest base elevation of any major Colorado ski resort and the beneficiary of snowfall totals that consistently exceed those of more famous Front Range ski destinations by a significant margin. The Rio Grande National Forest surrounds South Fork with wilderness hiking, backcountry camping, and native cutthroat trout fishing in the river's upper reaches, where the Rio Grande originates in the high San Juan Mountains before its long journey to the Gulf of Mexico.
Creede, approximately 20 miles north of South Fork via CO-149, is one of Colorado's most interesting small mountain communities—a former silver mining boomtown that survived the nineteenth-century bust through a combination of geographic isolation and community determination, and today hosts the Creede Repertory Theatre, a professional summer stock company that has been presenting plays in the historic mining town since 1966. The Weminuche Wilderness, accessible from multiple trailheads in the Rio Grande National Forest, is the largest federally designated wilderness area in Colorado, offering serious multi-day backpacking opportunities in a high-alpine landscape of 14,000-foot peaks, glacial lakes, and historic wagon roads converted to backcountry trails.
Chinook Cabins and RV Park operates from late spring through the hunting season in fall, with summer hiking and fishing driving the warmest-season demand and fall's elk and deer hunting seasons bringing a distinct wave of sportsmen and women to the Rio Grande valley. The property's century-long operating history gives it a character and community connection that newer campgrounds lack, and South Fork's position between Wolf Creek's skiing, Creede's arts culture, and the Weminuche Wilderness's backcountry makes it a versatile base for guests with a range of outdoor and cultural interests across a full Colorado mountain season.
