5.01 reviewsSurf Outpost in Malibu, California, provides a beachfront full hookup camping experience on one of the most iconic coastlines in the world—the Malibu coast's surf breaks, Pacific views, and the Santa Monica Mountains' dramatic meeting of mountain and ocean create the Southern California outdoor experience that is simultaneously globally mythologized and genuinely breathtaking for the camping guest who wakes to Pacific surf sounds in a campground on the actual Malibu shore. The outpost's beach access for surfing, paddle boarding, and swimming in the Pacific alongside the Santa Monica Mountains' horseback riding and hiking trails creates the complete Malibu experience—ocean and mountain together—that the Los Angeles region's geography uniquely enables within a single day's recreation.
The outpost's facility provides the practical services for beach camping in one of America's most expensive coastal real estate markets: full hookup sites, a beach for surfing, swimming, and paddle boarding in the Pacific, horseback riding access nearby in the Santa Monica Mountains, hiking trails into the national recreation area, a dog park for the trail companions and beach dogs that Malibu's outdoor culture includes, a general store for supplies, propane fills, showers, bathrooms, laundry, dump station, and Wi-Fi provide the self-sufficiency that camping on the Malibu coast requires given the surrounding community's resort pricing for all goods and services. The Pacific's surf provides the ambient soundtrack that defines the Malibu camping experience regardless of amenities.
Malibu's 27-mile coastline between Santa Monica and the Ventura County line encompasses the surf breaks that established Southern California surfing culture in the twentieth century—Surfrider Beach's right-hand point break was the site of the earliest organized competitive surfing events in the 1950s and 1960s and remains one of the most recognizable surfing locations in the world. The Malibu Lagoon State Beach's wetland at the mouth of Malibu Creek provides the birding and wildlife observation complement to the surf culture, and the Adamson House's Spanish Colonial Revival architecture preserves the Malibu Legacy Pottery tile work and the Rindge family's early Malibu rancho heritage in a National Historic Landmark directly on the Malibu Lagoon.
The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, the largest urban national park in the United States, encompasses 150,000 acres of chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and oak woodland between the Pacific Coast Highway and the San Fernando Valley—providing 500 miles of hiking and equestrian trails through a landscape where mountain lion, mule deer, and coyote occupy the rugged terrain that the Santa Monica Mountains' fault-block ridges create between the ocean and the urban grid. Topanga State Park's 36 miles of trails, the Backbone Trail's 67-mile traverse of the entire mountain range, and the Malibu Creek State Park's film location history provide the organized access to the mountains' backcountry interior.
Surf Outpost operates year-round in Malibu's Southern California Mediterranean climate, where the reliable 60-70 degree coastal temperature range year-round and the consistent Pacific swell make surfing and beach recreation genuinely viable in every month of the calendar—January beach camping in Malibu is a Southern California experience unavailable anywhere else in America at comparable latitude. The summer fog layer that blankets the coast in June and July burns off by midday, the autumn months of September through November bring the warmest and clearest beach days of the year, and the winter surf season's northwest swells create the most powerful and technically challenging wave conditions at Surfrider and the surrounding point breaks.
