Gateway to the Petrified Forest RV Resort in Holbrook, Arizona positions itself precisely as its name suggests — the launching point for one of the most remarkable geological and natural history landscapes in the American Southwest, the Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert, set in a historic Route 66 town that has its own Wild West character embedded in the architecture and streets surrounding the park's entrance. For travelers on the Route 66 and I-40 corridor, Holbrook is not just a waypoint but a genuine destination in its own right. Full hookup, partial hookup, and dry tent sites serve every type of traveler, with gravel lots sized for rigs of all configurations, a recently completed bathhouse with showers, laundry facilities, and fully handicap-accessible restrooms. On-site recreation includes fishing, horseshoe pits, BBQ pits, frisbee golf, and shaded picnic areas for the relaxed campground socializing that suits a national park visitor property. The gateway to the petrified forest rv park puts guests at 22 miles from Petrified Forest National Park, 42 miles from the Painted Desert viewpoints, and 41 miles from Winslow — meaning the entire northern Arizona plateau's major natural and cultural landmarks are accessible as day trips from a single Holbrook base camp. Petrified Forest National Park, 22 miles from camp, is one of the most geologically astonishing landscapes in North America — an ancient floodplain where 225-million-year-old trees have been replaced molecule by molecule by silica into quartz stone that retains every ring and grain of the original wood in brilliant rainbow mineral colors. The Crystal Forest, Agate Bridge, and the Blue Mesa badlands are among the most visually arresting features in an entirely extraordinary landscape. The Painted Desert, 42 miles from Holbrook, extends the color-banded badland scenery across the high plateau in a panoramic display that stops even experienced Southwest travelers in their tracks. The Standing on the Corner Park in Winslow commemorates the Eagles' famous lyric in a Route 66 town still delivering the highway's classic American character, while the La Posada Hotel and Restaurant offers one of the most beautiful railroad-era hotel restorations in the Southwest. Meteor Crater, roughly 50 miles west on I-40, is the best-preserved meteorite impact crater on Earth — a mile wide and 550 feet deep, with a well-designed visitor center exploring the science and history of the 50,000-year-old impact. Gateway to the Petrified Forest RV Resort is open year-round, with spring and fall delivering the most comfortable temperatures for national park exploration on foot. Summer brings the full palette of Painted Desert color under intense Arizona sunlight, while the park's relative lack of shade makes early-morning and late-afternoon visits the most rewarding in any season. Book early for spring visits when Route 66 road-trip season and national park visitation peak together.

I can't say bad or terrible. Although we did feel safe, the word "Resort" should be removed from the name. I wish I could submit photos. It's a large parking area with hookups on ground asphalt filled with weeds, sticker bushes and dog poop. We stayed in an actual RV Resort in Albuquerque before here with ful...Show more

There's a bath house but I didn't know about it until the day we left so I didn't use it/can't comment on it. You can see...Show more

Campground did not have an adequate sign that could be seen from the road. We ended up trying to enter the campground from the next road because we could see campers from there. That road was very muddy, had no access to the campground and got yelled at by a resident on that road when we tried asking how to ...Show more
